The
Denver Adult Down Syndrome Clinic (DADSC) participated in the 12th
Annual Buddy Walk Resource Fair on September 7th, 2008. The Buddy Walk
promotes advocacy and public awareness of Down syndrome. A "Buddy" is
an individual with Down syndrome. The annual event is hosted by Mile
High Down Syndrome Association. Over 2,500 individuals attended this
year's walk and raised over $300,000. For information on the 2009
Buddy Walk, please contact the Mile High Down Syndrome Association
at www.mhdsa.org.
The Denver
Adult Down Syndrome Clinic offers an adult education program called
ALIVE! (Ability, Life skills, Independence, Vitality Education). ALIVE!
is a weekly post-secondary educational program for adults with Down
syndrome. For the first time this year, 20 ALIVE! Program students
formed a Buddy Team for the Buddy Walk. The ALIVE! Buddy Team wore
coordinated t-shirts and were joined by many family and friends. The
Team raised over $1700.
The Buddy
Walk Resource Fair provided opportunities for many different community
organizations to display and promote their programs and services that
support persons with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities.
The DADSC participated in the Buddy Walk Resource Fair providing brochures,
handouts, and water bottles to Buddy Walk participants and friends.
